Use Your Teeth to Chew OnlyOne of the biggest mistakes people make is using their teeth to open packages or even bottles. Your teeth were meant to use for chewing and that is it. If you use them to open items, you could chip, fracture, or flat out break a tooth.
If the damage is severe enough, you could end up needing dental crowns or at the very least, a filling to make the tooth stronger. Your teeth are strong enough to handle tough foods, but that is the extent of it. The enamel of your teeth is meant to be the protection of the interior of your tooth. Taking good care of it is essential.
Chewing on Hard CandyDo you have a bad habit of chewing hard candy that should be sucked on? You shouldn't be consuming this type of candy in the first place because of the high risk of tooth decay, but that is another topic for another time.
If you are the impatient type and like to chew on the hard candy to get to the good stuff, you are putting your enamel at risk for serious damage. One hard candy can crack your tooth bad enough that you need to come in for an appointment.
Avoiding the Need to FlossFlossing might seem like such a simple task that you can overlook it and not realize any negative impact, but that is not the case. Flossing is just as important, if not more important than brushing your teeth.
It is the only way to get in between your teeth to remove the plaque and bacteria that has accumulated there. This means that you could be putting yourself at risk for gum disease and tooth loss just because you did not take a few minutes each night to floss.
Skipping Brushing at NightMany patients are guilty of not brushing their teeth at night. They figure if they brush them in the morning they will be fine. This will not make up for skipping this task at night, however. Nighttime brushing gets rid of all of the food debris and bacteria from the day, eliminating the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and subsequent tooth loss.
Taking care of your teeth is very important. If you use them in a way that they are not meant to be used or do not take good care of them on a daily basis, you are at risk for tooth loss and having to deal with replacements that will not provide the same results. Even though dental technology has increased dramatically, there is no replacement for your natural teeth, no matter how good the replacements may be.
You will talk, smile, and chew differently, each of which will take some adjusting to get used to. The best thing that you can do is take proper care of your teeth now by using them properly and not forgetting to practice proper oral hygiene.
