What Snacks Are Good For Your Teeth?

Posted on 9/10/2016 by Nic Grasvik
A group of fruits and vegetables beside each other.Sometimes when we are hungry between meals, we reach for whatever snack is nearby to tide us over, but snacking can be harmful to your teeth depending on what you choose.

Completely removing snacks can be tough, especially if you are always on the go, so when picking out your snack, try to pick ones that include the following foods:

Fresh fruits are always a great option, especially if you are looking for something sweet. Apple slices or grapes are easy to eat and very portable, which are important qualities in a snack. However, look out for dried fruit; while they may be convenient, they can be high in sugar and stick to your teeth, which can promote decay.

Many veggies have the crunch people crave when looking for snack foods, and when sliced, they can be paired with hummus or yogurt dip for a satisfying snack.

Lean proteins.

Lean protein can help you feel full until meal time, and they are extremely versatile ingredients when creating snacks or small meals. A hard-boiled egg is an excellent, portable protein that is high in vitamin D and phosphorus, which are nutrients that help your teeth stay healthy.

Dairy can add more nutrients like vitamin D, calcium, and protein to your snacks. Cheeses are a great dairy choice since they go with so many foods. They can be eaten alone, with veggies, whole-grain crackers, or even with fruit. Yogurt is another option, but be conscious of some of the hidden sugars some brands contain.

If you decide to treat yourself to the occasional bowl of pretzels or have a cookie with your coffee, be sure to rinse out your mouth with water to help remove any lingering food particles or sugars from your teeth. If you can, it is always best to brush your teeth after eating these snacks to reduce your risk of decay.
