3 Reasons Not to Ignore Gum Disease
Beaverton, OR

gum disease is no laughing matter

Gum disease is not something that you should ignore. If you are showing signs of this disease, including puffy or bleeding gums, you are already beyond the early stages and need to get treatment fast. Gum disease is preventable and even treatable in its earliest stages, but ignoring its symptoms only puts your oral and physical health at risk. Here are three big reasons not to ignore your gum disease:

You can lose your teeth. This is not a myth; you can lose your teeth from advanced gum disease because receding gums creates bone loss in your mouth, which takes away the solid anchor that your teeth had to hang on to. If the gum disease gets bad enough, you could wind up with significant tooth loss.

You can have a heart attack. Gum disease and heart disease are directly related. If you have gum disease, you are at a much higher risk for heart attack and stroke. This occurs because of the bacteria that resides in your mouth that passes through the bloodstream and clogs your arteries, putting you at risk.

Your teeth can become hypersensitive. If you let your gum disease get to its advanced stages, your gums will recede and your teeth will suddenly become hypersensitive to hot and cold items. Suddenly eating and drinking your favorite items will become painful and possibly not even possible.

Gum disease is no laughing matter. Even if you do not think that you have it, you should keep your regular dental appointments and let us determine if you are at risk or are showing signs of the disease. The earlier that you catch it, the easier it is to treat.
