How Asthma can Affect your Oral Health

Patient of dentist Dr. Nicholas Grasvik holding asthma inhalerMedication for many conditions can cause an adverse reaction in your mouth; this is especially true for patients with asthma. The medications taken to control the breathing can cause a decreased production of saliva and subsequent tooth decay. In addition, those with asthma typically breathe through their mouth, which contributes to a dry mouth, furthering the risk of cavities.

Oral Health Care is Important

In order to ensure optimal oral health if you suffer from asthma, you need to be extra cognizant of your oral health care habits. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

•  Drink plenty of water
•  Rinse your mouth out after taking your inhaler medication to promote the production of saliva and to prevent a dry mouth
•  Try to focus on breathing through your nose rather than your mouth to prevent a dry mouth
•  Brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day. If you can brush after every meal/snack, you will decrease your chances of tooth decay even further.
•  Eat healthy foods, avoiding sugary, processed foods as much as possible.
•  Avoid excessive consumption of carbohydrates as they turn into simple sugars in your mouth.
•  Snack only when necessary as snacking promotes tooth decay.

In addition to proper oral health care at home is the importance of your dental health care team to know about your asthma. The more informed you make your dental health care team, the more targeted the treatment you will receive and the more benefits your mouth will reap in the end.
