The Dangers of not Brushing Your Teeth Before Bed
Brushing your teeth at least twice a day is crucial to good oral health. If you had to choose just one time to do that brushing, bedtime would be the most important. This is the time that bacteria multiply faster than any other time in your mouth. This means that if you leave your teeth covered with bacteria and germs throughout the night, you are much more likely to be at risk for tooth decay and gum disease.
Little Saliva During Sleep
When you are asleep, you are swallowing much less than when you are awake. This means that your body does not need to produce nearly as much saliva as it does when you are awake. If there is sugar for the bacteria in your mouth to feed off of during this time, the risk of the acids eating away at your enamel is much greater. When you brush your teeth before going to bed, you minimize this risk quite a bit.
Flossing is Important Too
Just as brushing your teeth before bed is important, flossing is just as important. Flossing gets rid of the food particles that lie in between your teeth and in the nooks and crannies of your back teeth that the toothbrush could not get. In addition to food particles, flossing also rids your mouth of harmful plaque that the bacteria in your mouth would feed on throughout the night, putting you at risk for tooth decay and gum disease.
